Is Nothing Sacred?

I recently learned that Penguin books commissioned Canadian author Budge Wilson to write a prequel to Anne of Green Gables to celebrate the centennial of the original. Actually, it's called Before Green Gables and it was already published in January.

How can anybody else write Anne's story??

Am I going to read it? Probably...out of morbid curiosity. However, I can't believe it will actually seem like the same Anne.

Also, while we're on the subject, Kevin Sullivan is producing a fourth installment to the Anne series. This one sounds even worse than the third (if that's possible). The plot synopsis sounds terrible. Besides the character's names, it resembles absolutely nothing of the books. I don't get this. The books are so wonderful, why is it so hard to stick to the original story?

Totally sacrilegious... Why people don't just leave off, I don't know - something to do with these things $$$$$. I think it is a form of plagiarism.

I loved the Anne series and also "Little Women" and vowed after seeing them on tv that I would only ever read the book - tv spoils it too much for me...

So disgusted. They did a great job with the first Anne movie, then on the second movie they took a little to much liberty trying in tweaking characters and events....but it was still Annish enough. The 3rd movie was absolutely horrible and SOOOOOOO not "Anne". Why don't they move on to her other books and leave Anne alone.
I just got done rereading most of the Anne series. Its weird how differently I see it now.

I so agree. I actually tried to get through the third movie on the weekend, but I remembered why I didn't like it. Even her voice had changed to sound like a smoker's voice.

Wouldn't Anne of Ingleside and Rainbow Valley make perfect movies?

Blame the CBC which is 100% evil.

I wonder if there are details in some of L.M.Montgomery's writings that would help with the prequel, but I think everything has already been printed. It is NOT right for another author to write a prequel.

SAD. I love these books, and you're right...the third movie was the pits, so making a prequel and a fourth sounds terrible. Boo hoo...

OK I just read the description for the 4th movie, and boy am I PISSED! Honestly that is putting it very mildly. Does Kevin Sullivan have a death wish? I wouldn't be surprised if thousands of woman young and old attempted to strangle him. At least Megan Follows isn't in it. I heard she had reservations about the storyline in the 3rd one but did it anyway.

oh no. This is not a good idea! The book... I may pick it up like you out of morbid curiosity. The third movie was so awful I couldn't watch it! I own the first two on dvd... not the third.

I LOVE the book series! I read them over and over when I was younger. I still have them. The first movie was good, and they went down-hill from there. To make another one.....I am sure it would not be worth wasting the time to watch it! I will stick to the books.

honestly I haven't read the books and I don't think I've seen all the movies. crazy I know, but I did just get back from a trip and am trying to catch up with all my friends. The bed is beautiful, what a blessing. And the happy meal toys couldn't get any cheaper or more rediculous. Sometimes I just ask for toddler toys or just give the toy back.

No. nononononono!
I just finished reading the series for the millionth time.
Nobody can tell Anne like LM.
*sigh* and the third "anne" movie was ugh....I couldn't believe I was even watching an Anne movie. Aside from the character names, what part of that was ANne?
I'll probably still read and watch just out of curiosity, hoping that my Anne is there...

*sigh* I just finished Ingleside last night. I'm ready to start again. Something about Fall brings Anne home to me.
